A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is a safety device that cuts power in a split second if it senses electricity heading somewhere dangerous — like toward water. That's why they're near sinks, in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outside. They trip easily, and when one does, your breaker panel can look completely normal. That's the #1 reason people think they've lost power for no reason.

Check for an area outage first
Call your power company to see if there's a reported outage in your area. While you have them on the line, confirm your account is current — a past-due balance can cause a service interruption.
If the whole neighborhood is dark, it's almost certainly the utility — not your home.

Check the GFCI outlets in the affected area
Look at the outlets in the room(s) that lost power — especially kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, and outside. A GFCI outlet has two small buttons in the middle: TEST and RESET. If the power is out, firmly press RESET. You should feel or hear a click.
One GFCI outlet often protects several regular outlets nearby — so resetting one can bring back a whole area.

Head to the breaker panel
Find your panel — usually a gray metal box in a hallway, closet, basement, garage, or on an exterior wall. Open the cover so you can see all the breakers. Gently press each breaker toward ON — a tripped one often sits loose or in the middle.

Do a full reset on each breaker
Flip each breaker completely OFF, then completely back ON, one at a time. As you flip each one, listen for any beeps, dings, clicks, or hums — those sounds mean something on that circuit just powered back up.
Noting which breaker made a sound helps you pinpoint the affected area fast.

Check for GFCI breakers inside the panel
Some panels have GFCI breakers — these have their own little TEST button right on the breaker itself. If one has tripped, it usually sits in the middle. To reset: push it fully OFF, then firmly back ON, and press its test/reset button if needed.
These protect the same wet areas as GFCI outlets — don't skip them.

Still out? It might be an overload
Here's the part most people don't know. Bedrooms and living rooms are usually on 15-amp circuits. Under the National Electrical Code, a circuit can safely carry only about 80% of its rating continuously — so a 15-amp circuit is good for about 12 amps of steady load.

A single 1,500-watt space heater pulls 12.5 amps by itself — already past that limit before you plug in anything else. Add a TV, a lamp, or a charger, and the breaker does exactly what it's designed to do: shut off to prevent an overheated wire and a fire. That's the safety system working — not a fault in your home.
The rule: big heat- or motor-driven appliances each need their own outlet. Never gang two on one circuit, and never on a power strip or thin extension cord.

If a breaker keeps tripping, unplug the high-draw items on that circuit and reset it one more time.
